PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — Tuesday marks the first day of school for students in Providence.

Several changes have been made within the district over the summer. In fact, the school year comes on the heels of a massive scandal in the district.

Over the summer, the principal of Harry Kizirian Elementary School went to court.

Violet Lemar pleaded not guilty to failing to report allegations of sexual abuse by a gym teacher.

According to the Attorney Generals Office, several young girls told the principal that James Duffy had groped them, but Lemar did not report it to the police or to DCYF.

Police later substantiated the students’ claims and charged Duffy with five counts of second degree child molestation. Lemar is now on paid leave.

This incident led to all principals and vice principals in Providence getting special training by DCYF on how and when to report allegations of sexual abuse.

On the other hand, all kids attending public elementary schools in Providence can now eat lunch and breakfast for free. Last year, the city started a pilot program that offered free meals at 13 elementary schools. Now that program is expanding to all 22 schools.

Last year, 85% of students in the district qualified for free or reduced lunch.
