Providence Takes Down #21 Rhode Island In Annual Ocean State Showdown

PROVIDENCE, R.I – The Providence College men’s basketball team defeated the University of Rhode Island 63-60 in an exciting non-conference meeting on Saturday, Dec. 3 at the Dunkin’ Donuts Center. The Friars improve to 6-2 on the season while the Rams move to 5-3.  For the Friars, it was their first win of the season versus a ranked team.

The Rams jumped out to an early lead with a three point basket by Kuran Iverson in the opening minute of the half. Kyron Cartwright (Compton, Calif.) closed the Friars’ deficit after making back-to-back baskets and knotted the game at 10 after sending a full court pass to Isaiah Jackson (Gainesville, Fla.) who netted his first tally of the game.

At the half, the Rams led 35-29. During the first frame, the lead changed four times. Rhode Island led for 12:21 and Providence led for 5:36. Cartwright led the Friars on 15 of the team’s 29 points, the point guard was 4-5 from three point territory. Providence was 9-21 from the field and 6-11 from beyond the arc. Martin Hassan led the Rams on nine points and seven rebounds. Rhode Island was 12-27 from the field and 4-10 from beyond the arc.

The Friars and the Rams traded baskets for the lead throughout the second frame with four lead changes. Ryan Fazekas (Chesterton, Ind.) evened the score in the second, 47-47, on a fast break play with under nine minutes remaining. The Friars continued to be a dominating presence offensively shooting 45.7% from the field. Rodney Bullock (Hampton, Va.) netted an impressive dunk with under 20 seconds remaining in the half to give the Friars a three point lead over the Rams, 61-58.

The Friars edged the Rams by three points and secured their sixth victory of the season, 63-60. Cartwright led the Friars on 19 points, eight assists and four rebounds. Martin Hassan and Jared Terrell led Rhode Island on 14 points each.

The Friars will be back in action on Tuesday, Dec. 6 for the third of six consecutive home games as they host Brown at 7:00 p.m. on FS2.
