Providence to kickoff holiday season with annual tree lighting

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — Mayor Brett Smiley and Providence officials will gather on the front steps of Providence City Hall tonight for the city’s annual tree lighting.
The event is free and open to the public and includes numerous performances and activities for celebrants of all ages and abilities.
Food and refreshment options for the tree lighting will also be on site, and hot chocolate will be served.
According to a release, trees adorning the steps of Providence City Hall and the Providence Rink were donated by a member of the public who had slated them for removal.
The trees were selected and prepared by the City of Providence’s Forestry Division, with transportation support from Stanley Tree Service.
The trees will be turned into eco-friendly mulch for a city park after the holiday season.
The event kicks off at 7:30 p.m.
The tree lighting is part of the Three Nights of Lights, which is a weekend-long celebration.
