Providence woman, Smithfield man sentenced for attempting to smuggle contraband into prison

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — Acting United States Attorney Sara Miron Bloom said that a Providence woman and a Smithfield man were sentenced after admitting they provided contraband that was smuggled into the Wyatt Detention Center.

32-year-old Yahaira Cristina Contreras told a judge that she conspired with others to smuggle 201 suboxone strips containing buprenorphine into the prison, and that she transferred $3,000 from her bank account to another person’s account to pay for the strips and the smuggling.

30-year-old Kaii Almeida-Falcones, a former correctional officer at the prison, plead guilty to a charge of providing contraband to an inmate.

Contreras was sentenced to two years of federal supervised release, the first six months to be served in home detention with GPS monitoring, and was fined $1,500.

Almeida-Falcones was sentenced in November 2024 to six months in federal prison to be followed by twenty-four months of federal supervised release, with the first six months to be served on home confinement.
