WARWICK, R.I. (WLNE) – A National Grid rate hike was approved by the Public Utilities Commission Tuesday.

Dozens of people packed a hearing room in Warwick Tuesday morning, trying to fight the proposed electric rate hike.

National Grid was looking for a 53% increase.

After five hours, the three member PUC board approved an overall 19% hike.

National Grid says the rate increase was due to the increased cost of energy supplied to the New England power grid.

The 19% hike takes effect in October.
