BOSTON (WLNE) — Over 100 small animals are available for free adoption this weekend in Massachusetts.

The MSPCA-Angell and Lowell Humane Society will waive adoption fees for rabbits and guinea pigs from Friday to Sunday.

Both agencies will hold a “Fall in Love” adoption event at MSPCA adoption centers in Boston, Salem, Centerville, and Methuen, as well as the Lowell Humane Society in Lowell.

“Between Lowell Humane and our adoption centers, we have more than 100 guinea pigs and 30 rabbits,” said Bryn Rogers, MSPCA-Angell assistant director of adoption centers and programs. “Every cage in our shelters is full right now.”

Rogers said the animals were voluntarily surrendered by their owners.

“People need to surrender guinea pigs and rabbits for a variety of reasons — they couldn’t keep up with the care, they had too many pets, they’re moving and can’t take the animals with them,” she said.

The first 20 adopters at each location will be given free starter kits.

The starter kits are valued at $50 and include a bottle, bowel, hidey hut, bedding, hay, and food. They will not include cages.

Registration is recommended ahead of the weekend, but it is not required.
