PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — With Halloween just days away, the American Red Cross is sharing some safety tips for parents to help keep their kids safe during festivities this year.

  • To improve vision, use face paint rather than masks, and to improve visibility, give kids flashlights and add reflective tape to their costumes
  • Use flame-resistant costumes
  • Stay away from long and trailing fabric when choosing a costume
  • Make sure adults know where kids are going. A responsible adult should also accompany young children door-to-door
  • Be cautious around animals, especially dogs
  • Walk, don’t run
  • Only visit homes with porch lights on. Accept treats at the door and never go inside
  • Walk only on sidewalks and if there are none, walk on the edge of the road, facing traffic
  • When driving, use extra caution as young children may forget to look both ways before crossing
  • An adult should check all candy before eating. Remove loose candy, open packages and remove any choking hazards

The Red Cross further offered some safety tips for those expecting trick-or-treaters at their homes this year.

  • Light the area well so all visitors can see
  • Sweep leaves from your sidewalk and steps and remove any potential obstacles someone could trip over
