Red Cross shares fire safety tips for the holiday season

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — The Rhode Island Chapter of the American Red Cross shared fire safety tips for residents who choose to decorate during the holiday season.

The Red Cross reminds residents to:

  • Keep candles away from anything that could burn, put them out of reach of pets and children, and never leave them unattended
  • Check all holiday light cords to make sure they are not frayed and broken
  • If purchasing an artificial tree, check for fire-resistance label
  • Keep artificial trees away from fireplaces, radiators, and other sources of heat
  • If purchasing a live tree, make sure it is fresh and keep it watered
  • To test live trees, bend the needles up and down to make sure no needles fall off
  • Do not light the fireplace if stockings or other decorations are on, or hanging on the mantel
