A car crash victim left the scene shortly after his vehicle hit a tree Tuesday morning, only to be found by police hiding in the woods.

Rehoboth police responded to a call in the early morning hours on Tuesday, reporting that a single car had crashed into a tree. Officers learned from witnesses on the scene that a man had fled his vehicle moments after the crash. They were able to locate him hiding in the woods roughly half a mile from the scene of the accident.

The suspect, identified as Christopher Carey, a 25-year-old from Rehoboth, had a bloody face and reported that a friend was driving the car. A witness was able to rebuke the statement, saying that Carey was the only one who exited the car after the crash. Carey was checked by medical personnel and transported to Rhode Island Hospital.

He will be summoned to court for a number of civil and criminal motor vehicle charges, including driving to endanger, leaving the scene of property damage, marked lanes violation and misleading a police investigation.
