Rep. Langevin throws his support behind impeachment of President Trump

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) – While impeachment proceedings play out in Washington, members of Rhode Island’s delegation are making their positions clear.
Representative David Cicilline (D-RI) has been on board with the impeachment of President Donald Trump since day once, but Representative Jim Langevin (D-RI) has said he’d wait to decide.
That wait ended Tuesday afternoon, following the unveiling by democratic leaders in Washington of the articles of impeachment. Representative Langevin now supports impeachment.
“I have decided, with a heavy heart, to support the articles of impeachment,” Langevin said to ABC6.
Langevin said it took him this long to come to a decision because he wanted to review all of the facts and evidence and read the articles of impeachment for himself.
“Both reviewing the evidence, hearing testimony, reading the articles of impeachment, I’ve decided that history and the constitution and rule of law demand that President Trump be impeached.”
Representative David Cicilline spoke to cameras Tuesday morning, days after going head to head with the President on Twitter.
“These are articles of impeachment that are overwhelmingly supported by the evidence.”
Cicilline said, what the president is accused of doing, is what the Founding Fathers meant when the mentioned abuse of power and articles of impeachment.
“This is the President of the United States soliciting foreign government to corrupt our elections and undermine our democracy. So, I’m pleased that we’re moving forward on articles of impeachment,” said Cicilline.
Senator Sheldon Whitehouse sent the following statement:
“I commend the House on its somber and judicious impeachment inquiry. Should these articles clear the House, I look forward to their thorough and fair consideration in the Senate.”
The House Judiciary Committee is expected to take up the articles for debate and approval as soon as Thursday of this week, and there could be a full house vote next week before the Christmas recess.
