PROVIDENCE – Investigators are looking into whether an illegal drug lab sparked the fire at a vacant mill building in Providence.
Investigators recovered materials used to make butane hash oil (BHO), a concentrated form of marijuana, according to media reports.
The liquid butane used to make BHO is highly flammable.
The RI Patient Advocacy Coalition (RIPAC), a nonprofit medical marijuana group located directly next to the destroyed mill building on Kinsley Avenue, is denying any of its workers made the BHO that could have led to the fire. “I can’t say that they don’t have the knowledge but I can say they don’t have the desire,” RIPAC Executive Director JoAnne Leppanen said.
The official cause of the fire remains under investigation.
