A suspect in an armed assault on a University of Massachusetts Amherst student has surrendered to police.
The campus was under a "shelter in place" order for hours Thursday night after two men with guns were reported in Pierpont Hall, a dorm for first-year students.
19-year-old William Mckeown turned himself into Framingham Police on Friday. He faces charges of assault and battery with a deadly weapon.
UMass Police Chief Tyrone Parham says Mckeown, who is not believed to be a student at the school, entered Pierpont Hall at about 5:15 p.m. and hit a male victim on the head. The student suffered a laceration to his head.
Parham said the victim may have been hit with a gun, but there were "absolutely no shots fired," and that the attack was not random.
The student was treated at a hospital. His name was not released.
It is unclear if police are still searching for a second suspect.
