Several people are displaced tonight in Newport after a 3-alarm fire ripped through a multi-family home at 24-26 Catherine Street.

Fire crews were dispatched around 11 a.m. Friday morning after flames in the second floor spread from the walls into the third floor and attic.

It took about five hours for crews to get the fire under control and by 6 p.m., firefighters were still checking for hot spots in the building.

Residents made it out and there were no injuries reported. Firefighters were also able to save a family cat.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation by the State Fire Marshall.

The American Red Cross is assisting seven different families, fourteen people in total, ten adults and four children.

Many received assistance with emergency food, clothing, bedding and household necessities.

The four displaced children were given stuffed animals.
