Residents flock to stores to get essentials ahead of winter storm

CRANSTON, R.I. (WLNE) — Southern New England is bracing for the potential of a big winter storm Tuesday, and residents are making sure they are prepared before it is too late.

“I’m hoping for a good twelve inches,” said Paula Porter, Cranston. “If you’re going to be in winter, and it’s going to be cold, we might as well have snow and really enjoy it.”

The storm could bring up to a foot of snow locally.

“I have my gloves ready for shoveling,” Porter added. “I have the salt ready to put on the walkways,  double check everything and make sure there is a warm pot of beef stew. In case we lose power the candles and flashlights, check the batteries.”

Places like Durfee Hardware were keeping shelves stocked, and workers said they would be stocking bags of salt all day, at least 1,000 pounds worth.

Fresh Shores Food Market in Cranston is another popular stop for people ahead of a snow storm.

“We had a line waiting at the door before we opened this morning,” said Derek Preston, manager at Fresh Shores food market. “People are eager to come in and get their eggs, bread, milk, juice. Kind of typical stuff for people to get ahead of a storm.”

For some, making a traditional staple for the household is important.

“Since we are going to have a really bad day tomorrow,” said Cynthia Geremia of Cranston. “I decided to do the Italian mother thing and make gravy.”

People shared their message for Rhode Islanders to keep in mind with the inclement weather.

“Don’t freak out. It’s snow, it’s going to go away,” Porter said. “We are not in the days of the Blizzard of ’78 anymore. People hear a foot of snow and they lose their minds.”

“Just everyone be good and stay home,” Geremia added. “Make gravy, come and buy some. I’ll make some for everyone… Stay home!”
