Residents react to fatal car accident in Cumberland

CUMBERLAND, R.I. (WLNE) — A 17-year-old boy from Woonsocket died after sustaining injuries when he hit another car at the intersection with Vivian Avenue.

“I kind of just woke up out of bed just to hear a loud, loud bang,” Cumberland resident Jacob Dillon said.

Dillon’s car was damaged after the accident happened outside of his home on Mendon Road.

“It shook the house and everything to see all the lights flashing,” he said. “By the time I came downstairs, firetrucks and paramedics were already there.”

Police said the boy was driving on the wrong side of the road when the accident occurred.

Once hit, police said the boy’s car veered off the road, hit a telephone pole and fire hydrant, then tumbled before hitting a car parked in a driveway.

“It is very scary and it is not taught until it happens and the damage is already done,” Dillon added.

Police said the 17-year-old boy was not wearing a seatbelt and the investigation showed speeding was a factor in the crash.

“To do all of that damage he must have been flying,” Dillon said. “It is sad and unfortunate and it is a very tragic scene.”

The victim has not been named and the driver of the other car who got hit refused medical assistance on the scene.
