Rhode Island Delegation to join rally to protect state funds for libraries

CRANSTON, R.I. (WLNE) — Thursday morning in Cranston, the Rhode Island Congressional Delegation will be joining area librarians to stand with them in the face of federal cuts to the Institute of Museum and Library Services.

Senators Jack Reed and Sheldon Whitehouse and congressmen Gabe Amo and Seth Magaziner will join Rhode Island Chief of Library Services Karen Mellor, and Cranston Public Library Director Ed Garcia, all rallying to protect the more than $1 million in funds Rhode Island receives from the IMLS.

President Donald Trump issued an executive order to close the agency, and some states, including Rhode Island, saw their IMLS grants returned.

Thursday’s discussion will be at 11:30 a.m. at the Cranston Public Library.
