PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE)- Former Rhode Island General Treasurer Anthony Solomon has died after battling a lengthy illness.

The Providence native operated a Olneyville pharmacy before deciding in 1967 to join local politics as a state Representative for the 11th district.

After nine years in the House, Solomon won the position of Treasurer in 1977. After 7 years as Treasurer, the ambitious politician threw his hat in the Governor’s race, losing to Ed DiPrete in that race.

5 years later Solomon would return to his position as Treasurer, winning re-election, before retiring in 1993 for health concerns.

Governor McKee ordered the Rhode Island flag to be flown at half-staff today in honor of the former General Treasurer, it will remain as such until sunrise on Sunday, February 27.

“Treasurer Anthony Solomon served the people of Rhode Island in countless ways, from his 11 years as treasurer to his nine years in the General Assembly, as well as the pharmacy he operated in the Olneyville neighborhood, which has served as a vital resource for generations of residents,” Governor McKee said. “Susan and I send our condolences to his family including Representative Joe Solomon, his friends, and loved ones.”

“I am saddened by the passing of former State Representative and General Treasurer Anthony Solomon, who leaves a tremendous legacy of public service and helping countless Rhode Islanders,” Speaker Shekarchi said. “He was a stalwart Democrat and a quiet, respected leader in both politics and as a pharmacist. My condolences to current State Representative Joe Solomon Jr., his great-nephew, and all the members of his family.”

“Anthony Solomon was a gentleman and a conscientious public servant who worked for decades to ensure Rhode Island’s finances were healthy and to make the state a better place. As both a treasurer and a pharmacist who ran a successful family business, he treated people with respect and ensured they got outstanding service. I will always treasure his friendship and wise counsel,” Senator Jack Reed said. “We are grateful for his many contributions to the state and extend our deepest sympathies to the Solomon family.”
