EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — Rhode Island leaders on Tuesday launched a U.S. Small Business Administration Business Recovery Center for those losing revenue during the Washington Bridge closure.

The state Department of Transportation continued to monitor traffic after it opened two bypass lanes on the eastern side of the bridge for westbound traffic last week.

Gov. Dan McKee said the focus is on economic recovery as the state develops a permanent solution.

“Let’s continue to rally behind our small businesses,” McKee said. “We’re out there really letting people know — let’s end the year strong, let’s start the beginning of the year stronger.”

He asked Rhode Islanders to continue to shop and dine local to help businesses that have taken a hit in venue since the bridge closure.

Congressman Seth Magaziner and Gabe Amo and East Providence Mayor Bob DaSilva were among state officials speaking on behalf of businesses alongside McKee.

Magaziner noted that December is the make-or-break month for many retailers, restaurants, and other small businesses. He said many business owners depend on the holiday season more than any other part of the year.

Magaziner had a message for Rhode Islanders who are wondering how they can do their part to relieve small businesses:

“Don’t cancel your restaurant reservations. If you did cancel them, get new reservations. Don’t stay home and just shop online wen otherwise, you would’ve gone out to Providence or East Providence or elsewhere to shop in person.”

The SBA Business Recovery Center is located at Weaver Memorial Library on Grove Avenue in East Providence.

Businesses can get assistance from members of the SPA and commerce teams.

Small business owners with questions can stop by or call 521-HELP.
