Rhode Island officials respond to 2024 Presidential Election

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — Rhode Island officials have responded to the Associated Press announcing that Donald Trump is projected to win the the 2024 Presidential Election.

United States Senator Jack Reed (D-RI)

After a hard fought election in a country that remains closely divided, the American people have spoken and Donald Trump will be the next president.  I congratulate him and all those who stood for public office and ran spirited races at the federal, state, and local levels. President Trump inherits the strongest economy and the strongest military in the world, as well as restored international alliances.  We must work together to expand prosperity and opportunity, keep the American people safe, and meet the challenges our nation faces. The greatness of our nation does not flow from one person, not even the highest office in the land, and the presidency is not a monarchy.  American greatness springs from the people and the rule of law.  The government exists to serve, protect, and represent the people – not retribution and revenge. Our democratic republic will flourish so long as We The People — citizens, patriots, and especially elected officials — uphold our oath to the Constitution. My focus will remain on what is right for the people of Rhode Island, and I will never stop fighting for the interests of our great state.

United States Senator Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI)

This election result has changed the job description I was expecting. We know Trump’s character, so the next Congress will be less about pursuing progress than about containing the inevitable corruption of a second Trump administration. Democrats will need to be vigilant to protect Americans’ civil liberties, our democratic system, and the rule of law, as predatory special interests seek to feed themselves at the expense of our economy and environment. So we will press on.

I am grateful to the Vice President for a vigorous campaign run on short notice, that brought hope and joy to so many.

Reed also released a statement after Vice President Kamala Harris’ concession speech:

Vice President Harris is a person of tremendous strength and grit who has given historic service to the nation.  She ran a tough, energetic race under unprecedented circumstances and her character and integrity never wavered.  She remained true to the core American values we all hold dear.

With President Biden, she played a crucial role in rebuilding American manufacturing, boosting energy independence and addressing climate change, repairing our roads and bridges, and restoring our international alliances.  Those are major achievements, and they are spread across our country to the benefit of all.

Vice President Harris invited Americans from all walks of life to come together to expand opportunity and build an economy that works for everyone.  Although she fell short of her goal, she blazed a trail for others to follow.

United States Representatives for Rhode Island, Congressman Gabe Amo (RI-01)

We saw Americans participate in the sacred exercise of democracy by voting in a free and fair election. I hoped to turn the page on the divisiveness we heard and saw to support an agenda focused on unifying our country and securing economic opportunity for all to thrive. While I am disappointed by the results of the presidential election, my hand remains extended to serve Rhode Islanders in Congress. Today is a day of reflection, but tomorrow, we get back to work. Our nation’s leaders will need to move forward with the intensity of our convictions to strengthen our democracy, protect our freedoms, and have an inclusive future.

United States Representatives for Rhode Island, Congressman, Seth Magaziner (RI-02)

The voters have spoken, and while I am disappointed by the results of the Presidential election, I respect the electoral process and the choice of the American people. I will work with any administration of either party when it is in the best interest of Rhode Islanders. But I also know that Rhode Islanders expect their representatives in Congress to always stand up to the executive branch when necessary to defend our democracy, rights, and freedoms. No matter what lies ahead, I am committed to fighting for Rhode Island values in Washington.
