Rhode Island Police Chiefs Association remind public to not drive under the influence for Super Bowl

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — The Rhode Island Police Chiefs Association said that drivers should remember to celebrate the Super Bowl responsibly and not drive drunk.

“Police departments around Rhode Island will have additional patrols on the road to identify and apprehend impaired drivers,” Warwick Police Chief Bradford Connor said.

Connor added that Rhode Islanders should make a plan for getting home if they decide to drink, including designating a driver, using a ride share service, or planning to stay where they are.

The first offense for driving under the influence of liquor or drugs can carry several of the following penalties:

  • Possible jail sentence of up to one year at the ACI.
  • Mandatory license suspension from three to 18 months.
  • Mandatory community service from 10 to 60 hours.
  • Fines of not less than $100, nor more than $500
  • Fees can easily reach a few thousand dollars.
