PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — Officials will celebrate the U.S. Army’s birthday today at the Rhode Island State House.

The army is set to turn 249 years old.

The army was founded on June 14 in 1775, when the Continental Congress authorized enlistment of riflemen to serve the United Colonies for one year.

To mark the date, Governor Dan McKee and Senator Jack Reed will speak at observance at the State House.

The 88th Army band is scheduled to perform, and participants in the ceremony will have the opportunity to cut an Army Birthday cake.

The ceremony is set to begin at 11:30 a.m.
