Rhode Islanders reflect on George Michael’s life

PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Many are reflecting Monday night on pop icon George Michael’s life after passing away at the age of 53 on Christmas day.
The international star has left an impression on many including here in Rhode Island.
George Michael first achieved fame in the mid-80s, and now more than 30 years later, he is still remembered by some as one of the best.
George Michael sold over 100 million albums throughout his pop star career.
In fact, a few copies are still ready for purchase at Olympics Records in Providence.
The owner of the shop, Kevin Morosini, was shocked to hear that Michael, who was just 53-years-old, had passed over the weekend.
“Another artist falls that really was beloved by not only Americans, but British folks as well, so this is an international day of mourning I feel like,” said Morosini.
Michael is remembered for hits such as “Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go” and “Faith.”
“He became one of the greatest. I think he will always be remembered that way, as one of the greatest of definitely my time,” said Anthony Hayes, a George Michael’s fan.
Michel is not only remembered for his music, but also for giving back.
“He was a role model. He helped out with things like live aid, aids charities. He definitely did what he could, he used his celebrity at a time where you know not as many folks would be willing to stand up and take a stand for what they believe in,” said Morosini.
Morosini believes Michael was someone many looked up to.
“I definitely feel like he is a role model for the gay community, the straight community, he was breaking barriers.”
Fans believe Michael will live on through his music.
“There is no way you can put on a 45, ‘Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go’ without dancing around on your bed. I think everybody has probably been there at one point or another.”
“He’s an excellent artist and he will deeply be missed.”
Olympic Records says the first customer to visit the store Monday morning was looking for a George Michael CD and the demand is only expected to grow.
