Rhode Islanders take planes, trains, and automobiles to holiday destinations

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — There are many ways travelers are getting to where they need to be for the holiday, whether by plane, train, or car —

Officials said more than 55 million Americans will be traveling this Thanksgiving, and over 49 million will be traveling by car.

“Any time you travel on a holiday it is going to back up a bit,” Mark Schieldrop of AAA Northeast said. “The biggest thing we can recommend people do is for people to get an early start on the road.”

Although officials said many people will be traveling by car, others are choosing to travel by planes and trains.

Amtrak said it will be running additional trains through Sunday to help with the high number of travelers.

“Today we are seeing such an increase in ridership with the holiday and a lot of the trains are sold out,” Amtrak spokesperson Jen Flanagan said. “Be mindful of arriving 45 to 60 minutes ahead of time so that you can get the seat that you want.”

It is suggested travelers give themselves extra time and always have a backup plan.
