RI EMA shares tips on how to prepare ahead of tropical storm Isaias
CRANSTON, R.I. (WLNE) – Preparations are happening all over the state as tropical storm Isaias is set to hit Southern New England Tuesday, and the Rhode Island Emergency Management Agency (EMA) is sharing tips on how to be ready.
Armand Randolph, Recovery Branch Chief and External Affairs Officer for the Rhode Island EMA, said the agency has been preparing for days.
“So far right now, it’s not as bad as calculated or forecasted earlier, but it’s still gonna be an issue or a nuisance so we’re gonna make sure we’re prepared in case it goes a little bit different.”
He said, the first thing the EMA does is have conference calls with the National Weather Service. Then, they contact other state agencies like the Red Cross to make sure everyone is on the same page.
The EMA will then make sure to push information to the public on how to be best prepared.

“Get documents in order and make sure they’re in a safe place, check-in on neighbors, also, we always talk about pets. Make sure your pets are okay in case you have to leave or the power goes out,” Randolph said.
If the power goes out, make sure you’ve charged your electronics ahead of time. With high winds forecasted, also be sure to tie down any loose items in your backyard.
“Make sure you secure any outdoor furniture, and especially restaurants now in the COVID environment. Make sure you take care of your tables, chairs, tablecloths.”
But the most important thing, Randolph said, is communication.
“One, check on your neighbors. Make sure you have a communication plan in case the power does go out. Talk with your children, any other family members, make sure everybody is prepared. Just take time, take it easy, take a deep breath in and we’ll get through this.”
A spokesman for National Grid said they are closely monitoring the storm and are putting plans into place including bringing in additional resources to assist with the impact the storm will have.
