RI ethics change would allow for higher gift value to public officials, inflation cited
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — The Rhode Island Ethics Commission is considering some changes to the state’s code of ethics concerning gifts.
Currently, public officials can receive gifts worth up to $25 from “interested persons,” but the combined value can’t be more than $75.
The commission’s proposal would double those limits to $50 and $150 citing inflation for the change.
Commissioners are also hoping to re-define “interested persons” to stop lobbyists from giving gifts.
The office is now taking public comment on the proposals.
