RI Highway Renumbering Begins Soon

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – We now know when work will begin to renumber Rhode Island’s highway exits. Work starts in less than two weeks on the north end of I-295.
Rhode Island is following a federal mandate by renumbering the exits along all of its major highways.
RIDOT Director Peter Alviti has said the new numbers will be mileage–based, instead of in sequential order like they are now.
Alviti says, “Depending upon where an exit falls upon the highway, however many miles from the beginning, that is the number it will be given. So if an exit falls 5 miles from the beginning of the highway, its exit number 5.”
First up to change will be I-295. RIDOT now says work will start the week of November 27th. They’ll start near the northern end of the highway, at the exit for Diamond Hill Road – Route 114 – in Cumberland. That exit will change from exit 11 to exit 22.
Crews will spend 2 weeks changing the exits along I-295, one at a time, moving south toward Warwick. The state plans to make the transition as easy as possible for drivers.
Alviti says, “We’ve looked at other states that have implemented it this way and the states that have had the least problems have had these temporary signs associated with them, so we’ll probably leave them up for a couple of years while people get used to the new numbering system.”
After I-295, RIDOT will move on to I-95 and I-195. They’ll also renumber Routes 4, 10, 24, 37, 78, 403 and the Airport Connector.
