PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) _ Democratic Rep. Joseph Almeida is maintaining his innocence in his first public comments since being charged with misappropriating more than $6,000 in campaign contributions.

State Police arrested Almeida Tuesday. He then resigned as deputy majority whip of the Rhode Island House of Representatives.

He said in a statement Wednesday he’s focused on representing his district. He says he respects the legal process and maintains his innocence as the matter is resolved in court.

Almeida attended Wednesday’s House session and shook hands with several colleagues. Almeida said he didn’t want to comment beyond his prepared statement.

Almeida’s lawyer entered a not-guilty plea on his behalf in district court Tuesday. He was released on $10,000 personal recognizance.

The 57-year-old Providence Democrat is a retired police officer.

Prosecutors said he was unable to account for $6,122.03 in expenditures.
