NORTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. (WLNE) — The Rhode Island Air National Guard were deployed to Texas Friday night to support the recovery efforts following Hurricane Harvey.

Members of the Guard took off at 10:00 p.m. Friday from the Quonset Air National Guard Base.

Their mission is to transport rescuers and equipment from Houston back to their home station in Kentucky.

“We’re proud to provide any assistance we can, and are anxious to bring some measure of comfort to the Americans affected by this disaster,” said Colonel Daniel Walter, 143d Airlift Wing Commander.

The National Guard has been on stand-by since Harvey first made landfall. This is their first local crew to head Texas.
