RI prison system goes green

CRANSTON, R.I. (AP) – The Rhode Island prison system is going green.

A Department of Corrections spokeswoman says the prison system has earned $9,400 so far by implementing a recycling program. It's a part of an effort to reduce costs by introducing energy-efficient appliances and using inmate labor to staff recycling programs.

An outdoor recycling center has been set up at a former dumping spot on prison complex grounds where homeless people would occasionally camp out. The area is now enclosed by a locked fence and has various Dumpsters for sorting recyclables.

Wiring, construction and plumbing materials from four buildings that are undergoing renovations are also being recycled.

Corrections officials are also introducing environmentally-friendly latex paints, soy-based floor materials and high-efficiency, low-voltage lighting and fans at the renovation sites.
