PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — A pair of right to repair bills have been introduced to the Rhode Island House.

Representatives  Rebecca Kislak and Mary Ann Shallcross Smith proposed the bills Wednesday which allow Rhode Islanders the right to repair their own digital electronics and agricultural equipment.

Kislak introduced the Digital Electronics Right to Repair Act (2024-H 7095), which would require manufacturers to make tools, parts and manuals needed to repair electronic components in their products available to independent repair shops and owners.

Shallcross Smith introduced the Agricultural Equipment Right to Repair Act (2024-H 7229), which would make information and tools needed to maintain and repair electronics-enabled agricultural equipment available to independent service providers and owners.

The purpose of the bills is to prevent anti-competitive practices, reduce waste and enable local repair businesses.

“I can repair a broken light switch in my house. Why can’t I repair a broken screen or light or battery in my phone, computer or dishwasher? If I own it, why can’t I fix it?” said Representative Kislak.
