RI single dad, recovering alcoholic offering free rides to strangers on St. Patrick’s Day
"I'm trying to do my part," Hulkow says.
WARWICK, R.I. (WLNE) – While many are preparing to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day with a drink or two, a single dad from Warwick is getting ready to spend the night by his phone, ready to be the designated driver for strangers, for free.
“I would rather spend the gas money and make sure somebody wakes up the next day to see their family. I’m trying to do my part,” says Patrick Hulkow.
Two days ago Hulkow posted in a Warwick Facebook group, to make sure those drinking on the holiday knew they had options.
As a recovering alcoholic, Hulkow says he’s ready to drive anyone home, whenever and wherever- to make sure no one gets behind the wheel drunk.
“I buried a child back in 2007,” Hulkow details. “It was tough. I had a battle with alcohol for a little bit and I have been clean since 2007. I am a firm believer that anyone can get better; as long as you’re alive there’s still hope.”
The father of three hopes this also sets an example for his kids.
“We all have to teach our kids these basic morals, you know? That we’re not just accountable for ourselves, we have to be accountable for those around us too. Somebody has to step up to the plate and do the right thing.”
