PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Rhode Island State Police is closing their investigation into House Speaker Nick Mattiello’s use of mail in ballots in his re-election race.

Officials determined that Mattiello did nothing wrong and no crime was committed.

His Republican challenger, Steven Frias, complained to the Board of Elections hoping this investigation would overturn Mattiello’s narrow victory by just 85 votes.

“I’m grateful that the State Police concluded the investigation. It’s unfortunate that politically motivated allegations were made so freely. It is time to move on from this negative campaign and as such, I will focus on the needs and concerns of District 15 and the state of Rhode Island,” said spokeswoman, Patti Doyle in a statement.

The Board of Elections is set to certify the results next week.
