PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — The Rhode Island State Police received national recognition after a "gold standard assessment" from the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA).
The CALEA Summer Conference was hosted by RISP Saturday, where assessors presented their conclusions on numerous law enforcement agencies across Rhode Island and the country.
Col. Ann Assumpico, superintendent of the RISP, announced Sunday that the department received the commission’s highest level of achievement, the Accreditation with Excellence Award, presented for exceeding intensive standards of an agency’s training, policies and practices.
The review committee commended Assumpico and the division for:
- employing in ratios reflective of the state’s population diversity;
- having few internal and external complaints filed against the division;
- having few pursuits reflecting adherence to the division’s pursuit policy;
- being one of few law enforcement agencies to have a K-9 unit specifically specifically trained to detect electronics used in cyber crimes.
The State Police was the only law enforcement agency in the state to earn the award, meeting or exceeding over 480 professional standards.
“We were able to attain this status because of the hard work and dedication of our Command Staff, Patrol Commanders and Unit Leaders,” Assumpico said. “But this assessment clearly shows that our troopers, the men and women serving the citizens of our state every day, are hands-down our greatest asset.”
RISP were first accredited by CALEA in 1994, and first received a Accreditation with Excellence Award in 2014. The division has been continually accredited since.
