RI State Police release holiday weekend highway statistics

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) – Rhode Island State Police had a busy Fourth of July holiday weekend, arresting multiple people on DUI charges and responding to almost 1,000 service calls.
State Police Colonel James Manni said 9 individuals were arrested over the 5-day period, charged with driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
“There is simply no excuse for anyone driving while impaired by drugs or alcohol,” said Manni. “The Rhode Island State Police will continue to aggressively pursue, arrest and prosecute anyone who drives while under the influence of alcohol or drugs, putting the lives of everyone else at risk.”
Additionally, during the same time period, the State Police also responded to 953 calls for service, assisting 82 disabled motor vehicles and investigating 61 motor vehicles crashes.
State Troopers issued 507 citations over the weekend, including:
- 135 for speeding
- 57 for seatbelt and child restraint violations
- 19 for distracted driving.
