RI State Representative calling for the Governor to reverse executive order on illegal immigrants

In a letter to Governor Raimondo, State Representative Bobby Nardolillo calls for her to reverse an executive order on illegal immigrants. He says while this is a controversial topic for lawmakers on both sides, the resources of Rhode Islanders need to be protected.

He says to do that, Governor Raimondo needs to reverse former Governor Lincoln Chafee’s policy. The policy states that the Rhode Island Executive Branch can not detain a person for Federal Immigration Authorities, unless they’ve obtained a judicial deportation order. Representative Nardolillo says this mandate puts everyone at risk.

"Really, the law is being broken and with this executive order that’s in play. Once it’s reversed it will allow the sequence of events that President-elect Trump is looking to go," says Representative Nardolillo.

He adds, if any person is in the U.S. or Rhode Island illegally, our country and our state, should provide the opportunity for legal citizenship. Otherwise, they should be subject to our state and federal laws.

He plans to submit legislation for E-Verify, which is a system that allows businesses to determine the eligibility of their employees to work in the U.S.
