RI Young Republicans, Rep Sanchez continue spat after rep’s ICE ‘Nazi thugs’ tweet

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — The Rhode Island Young Republicans have again called for a censure of a Rhode Island state legislator for his rhetoric regarding Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents.

The Young Republicans have issue with Representative Enrique Sanchez for posting on social media comparing ICE to Nazis and thugs while apparently threatening a “day of reckoning.”

The group said they will send a letter to the House Committee on Conduct chair, and House Speaker Joseph Shekarchi, requesting the first item of business in January be that censure.

Representative Sanchez took to social media in response, writing “The fact that the so-called ‘Party of Free Speech’ is calling for me to be censured for my tweets is just the latest example of their hypocrisy.”

There’s been no response yet from the house, or Speaker Shekarchi.

The group and Sanchez were at odds earlier in July over similar comments made by the rep on social media.

The Republican Party of Rhode Island also commented on the matter saying in part:

“The Republican Party of Rhode Island is demanding the immediate censure of State Representative Enrique Sanchez following his repeated public calls for violence against federal immigration officers—and now, his own admission to actively stalking them in Providence.”

ABC6 has reached out to Rep. Sanchez for comment in this matter.
