Ribbon cutting celebrates opening of new Rogers High School
NEWPORT, R.I. (WLNE) — State and local officials gathered to ceremonially open the new Rogers High School Friday.
The new school is located on Wickham Road in Newport.
The new facility is 167,000 square feet in total and includes a Career and Technical Education program, new science labs, and a restaurant serving food made by students in the culinary program.
Members of the first graduating class of the old Rogers High School, back in 1958, were on hand to help cut the ribbon for the new school.
One of those graduates was Victoria Johnson, who went on to teach at the school and then became principal from 1997 to 2003.
“For me to come back and just take a look at this, it’s like ‘Wow. This is absolutely fabulous,'” Johnson said. “Newport is very fortunate to have Rogers High School in their presence and the students who come here are fantastic. They love their school.”
