RICAS results released, 2% increase in math, English language arts

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — The Rhode Island Department of Education releasing standardized test results for grades three through 11.

Across the state, less than 20% of economically disadvantaged students are proficient in English language arts and math.

The state is working to improve student test scores by 2030 but RIDE notes that despite schools being fully open the past two years since the pandemic, research shows it will take three to five years to get back to pre-pandemic levels.

The test results are broken down into English language arts, mathematics, English language proficiency, and Science.

In Providence, 15% of students in grades three through eight are proficient in ELA, a 2% increase from 2022.

In math for grades three through eight, 13% of students are proficient, compared to 9.8% in 2022.

For ELA on the SAT, taken by students in tenth and eleventh grade, 27.6% of students are proficient, which is down compared to 28.6% the year prior.

In math on the SAT, 13.4% are proficient. which is up one percent from 2022.

If you look at how a non-city school district is performing, for example at least 50% of students in Barrington are performing proficient in all subjects.

Across the state, students in grades three through eight saw only a two to three percent increase in ELA and math.

Governor Dan McKee said the state continues to move in the right direction towards improving test scores by 2030.
