Richmond officer dies after unexpected illness

RICHMOND, R.I. (WLNE) — Police departments throughout Rhode Island are grieving the loss of a fellow officer who died after a brief and unexpected illness.

Sgt. Michael Lawing of the Richmond Police Department died suddenly from a short and brief illness.

According to Richmond PD, Lawing started his law enforcement career in November 2001 with the town of Richmond, and was promoted to Sergeant in 2011.

He initiated the first K-9 program in the department’s history in 2018 after securing grant funding, and was instrumental in implementing our body-worn camera program over the last two years.

Lawing was also a volunteer member of the Richmond-Carolina Fire Department for many years.

“He was truly one of the most talented police officers we’ve had the pleasure of working with. Intelligent, capable, and witty, he could always make you laugh when you needed it most,” said the department in a statement.

“Our heartfelt sympathy and support are with his wife, children, parents, and family at this time. We thank everyone for their condolences, and respectfully ask that you keep Sergeant Lawing’s family in your thoughts and prayers.”

In a GoFundMe posted back in September, a family member shared that Lawing was rushed to the hospital and was diagnosed with a severe case of pancreatitis.

His wife was traveling back and forth to be with him in the hospital in New Haven, while taking care of their son.

The GoFundMe raised over $22,000.

Lawing was also longtime dedicated member of The Washington County Fair.
“As a committed Richmond police officer, Sgt. Lawing played a vital role in ensuring the safety and security of the fairgrounds each year,” the fair’s Facebook page wrote.
“His unwavering dedication to protecting our community and creating a safe environment for all who attended the fair will be deeply missed.”
