RIDEM providing incentives for lifeguard applicants

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — The Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management said state beaches and state parks are ready for the crowds on Memorial Day.

However, they are still looking to fill more lifeguard positions for the rest of the summer.

“I think staffing is on a good trend,” Chief of Staff Amanda Cantrell said. “We also operationally may have to adjust swimming areas to adjust coverage and safety. I think we are feeling good going into Memorial Day weekend.”

Cantrell said RIDEM has hired 76 lifeguards but is still looking to fill up to 150 positions.

“Just like last year, we are running an incentive program for lifeguards,” Cantrell said. “If you apply and get hired by June 28, you will be able for a one-time incentive of $500.”

For those who work through Labor Day weekend, another bonus is eligible for retention.

But with all the fun for the holiday weekend, Cantrell said swim safety is important to keep in mind and that lifeguards are not the first line of defense.

“If you are not comfortable getting in the water, then don’t get in the water,” she said. “Don’t swim alone”
