PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE)-

The Rhode Island Department of Health have issued an advisory to consumers after federal health officials opened an investigation into powdered infant formula.

The investigation stems from four infant illnesses connected to products from an Abbott Nutrition facility in Michigan.

The illness, connected to powdered baby formula from the facility, include Cronobacter sakazakii and Salmonella infections. Investigators believe that a case of Cronobacter may have contributed to the death of one infant. Cronobacter infection can cause both sepsis and meningitis. According to the RIDOH, symptoms of sepsis and meningitis include poor feeding, irritability, temperature changes, jaundice, grunting breaths, and abnormal movements.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is advising consumers not to use Similac Alimentum or EleCare powdered infant formulas if:

  • The first two digits of the code are 22 through 37 and
  • The code on the container contains K8, SH, or Z2, and
  • The expiration date is 4-1-2022 (APR 2022) or later.

The advisory does not relate to any liquid formula products.

More information on Cronobacter and infant formula is available on the CDC’s website.
