RIDOH says Johnston WIC services ending May 31

JOHNSTON, R.I. (WLNE) — The Rhode Island Department of Health said that Tri-County Community Action Agency will no longer be providing Women, Infant, and Children services at its Johnston site after May 31.

WIC is a public health program that offers families one-on-one nutrition counseling, referrals for specialized services, and food prescriptions that allow certain types of food to be purchased with EBT cards at no additional cost.

RIDOH said that about 800 participants receive these services through the Johnston site and that it is working to connect them with alternatives.

Appointment scheduled after May 31 have been cancelled, and RIDOH said that the following transition options will be available:

  • Participants currently receiving services at Tri-County in Johnston can transition to a nearby WIC location without needing to reapply, unless they are due for recertification.
  • Benefits for children due for recertification will be extended automatically for an additional month to assist families during the transition.
  • New locations can be found at health.ri.gov/wic or by entering your ZIP code at signupwic.com to find a list of nearby WIC locations.

Telehealth appointments will also be made available

More information on the ending of services can be found by calling the Tri-County Community Action Agency at 401-351-2750 (ext. 6) or RIDOH’s Health Information Line 401-222-5960.
