PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — According to the Rhode Island Department of Health, Rhode Island is to rejoin the Nurse Licensure Compact in the new year.

All licenses issued to RNs and LPNs after January 1, 2024, will become Multistate Licenses (MSL) which will allow nurses to practice in Rhode Island and other complying states.

This new law will impact the following licensees:

  • Anyone applying for a Rhode Island RN or LPN license for the first time and do not plan on starting immediately should consider waiting until after January 1, 2024, to apply
  • Anyone who is currently licensed in Rhode Island and the licensee’s Primary State of Residency (PSOR) is Rhode Island should apply for an MSL at their next license renewal date, with the exception that there is an immediate employment opportunity in a compact state
  • Anyone whose PSOR is Rhode Island, or a compact state should verify that they have an MSL issued by the primary state
  • If a licensee’s PSOR is a compact state but they are not licensed under the NLC, they must download and complete a NLC Status Form and return it to the Office of Nurse Registration and Nursing Education
  • Anyone who is currently licensed in Rhode Island and their PSOR is not a compact state, their license status in Rhode Island will not change, and no further action is necessary
