RIDOT announces road in Middletown has been fixed, safety precautions added

MIDDLETOWN, R.I. (WLNE) — The Rhode Island Department of Transportation and state officials announced the completion of construction on Aquidneck Avenue.
The $8.9 million project reconstructed the deteriorated road into a long-lasting roadway by using “pavement reclamation,” as well as made safety improvements for pedestrians and students.
To improve safety, new sidewalks were built along the western side of the road and crossing features were added at the entrance of the J.H. Gaudet Middle School.
Bike lanes were also added to allow for other forms of transportation and to reduce vehicle emissions.
Additionally, RIDOT said it combined two projects into one, and installed a main water line underneath the roadway with the Newport Water Department.
“Aquidneck Avenue is a perfect example of our commitment to address important roads for our communities that have not been properly maintained for decades,” RIDOT Director Peter Alviti said. “Today we have a solidly rebuilt roadway that will serve the businesses on this road and residents and visitors who frequent them for many years to come.”
According to RIDOT, about 16,100 vehicles use this section everyday.
