PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — The Rhode Island Department of Transportation said that a contractor working on the Interstate 95 15 Project cut down a grove of trees in Providence without permission.

The crews worked for Skanska, a construction company previously awarded $600 million to replace several bridges on the I-95 corridor.

The trees off of Elmwood Avenue were not meant to be cut down, and the area could be more prone to erosion and flooding without them.

A spokesperson for Skanska declined to comment.
