RIDOT says Washington Bridge bypass lanes should open ‘this weekend’
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — The Rhode Island Department of Transportation said that two bypass lanes on the Washington Bridge are expected to open this weekend.
RIDOT said that the opening date is “well-ahead” of the original two-week projection.
Installation of barriers on the eastbound side of the bridge for the bypass has already begun.
The department added that it is looking into other strategies to alleviate traffic, including temporary ferry service between Bristol and Providence. The Department said it has already spoken with Interstate Navigation, SeaStreak and Vineyard Fast Ferry.
“Right now, this is the number one priority,” Gov. Dan McKee said at a press conference. “Our all-hands-on-deck team of state and local leaders continues to ensure public safety while minimizing any burden caused by the temporary traffic patterns.”
