PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — Work at the Providence viaduct on I-95 Friday night will have new lanes open for commuters by Saturday morning, according to Rhode Island Department of Transportation director Peter Alviti.

The road will be restriped Friday night in order to create the lanes, which will be from where the entrance from Atwells Ave. once merged and another lane from where the 6/10 Connector and Downtown Providence entrances merged with the highway.

The project, which began in 2020 according to RIDOT’s website, is nearing its completion.

Following the opening of the new lanes, crews will focus on a final repaving project in the area.

UPDATE 5/30: The work has been postponed due to weather.
