Over the past year, dozens of drivers went the wrong way on local highways, but RIDOT believes new technology prevented those incidents from becoming disasters.

RIDOT officials say there have been 13 deaths caused by wrong-way driving since 2008 and they believes their program is preventing that number from growing.

"The early indications are that they’re very effective and it’s been successful so far,” said Bob Rocchio of RIDOT.

One year ago, wrong–way driving technology was installed in 24 high–risk locations across Rhode Island. The $600,000 detection system was paid for by federal safety funds. Now, RIDOT says it’s paying off.

"We’ve had 47 detections of wrong–way drivers where these devices are installed,” Rocchio said.

And in all 47 cases, there were no accidents. When a wrong–way driver is detected, LED lit signs start flashing. If the driver continues, a loud alarm sounds inside the Transportation Management Center and police are notified. In addition, a message is displayed on overhead signs to warn nearby drivers.

"We’re one of the first states doing this on this large of level. Many states are watching us because again it’s new technology,” said Rocchio.

The new technology doesn’t come without problems. RIDOT says there have been a high number of false alarms, but they’re able to double check through a camera system before dispatching police. With some fine–tuning, they’re planning to expand in 2018.

"We’re looking at 24 more locations and it’s not just these devices. It’s going to be geometric improvements, signing striping,” Rocchio said.

RIDOT will work with Rhode Island State Police to determine where the new detectors will go.
