Former RIH nurses assistant charged with sexually assaulting patient

A former nurses assistant at Rhode Island Hospital is charged with sexually assaulting a patient.

According to police, 52-year-old Daniel Goncalves, of Providence, molested a 40-year-old female patient during two different overnight hospital stays.

The latest incident occurred on January 28th of this year, but the victim told police Goncalves also assaulted her last year.

The victim reported the assaults to police on February 4th was able to identify Goncalves from a photograph.  He was taken into custody on Thursday by Rhode Island State Police.

The hospital has since fired Goncalves, but for reason unrelated to the investigation.

Goncalves, who has a previous criminal record, was arraigned Friday and released on surety bail. He is ordered to have no contact with the victim.
