PROVIDENCE, R.I.-  More than 32,000 people visit everyday. Kennedy Plaza welcomes all walks of life, but occasionally invites trouble.

"Fights break out in front of buses that I have seen sometimes.  I know a couple of months ago someone had a gun and they were waving it in front of someone over there” said Tori Mandel of Providence.

Safety concerns have plagued the plaza’s reputation for years.  “Girls get harassed sometimes, I’ve seen that.  They’re made uncomfortable” said Mandel.

In April, 15 people were arrested at Kennedy Plaza in an undercover bust.

“In the past, we’ve had problems dealing with drugs just right in the open” said Michael Blalock of Providence.

RIPTA, which operates from the location downtown has hired a private security company using unarmed guards to monitor the area seven days a week.

“This added security presence will promote a safer and more secure environment for everyone” said the Executive Director.

But, will it work?   “I think it should bring a positive change.” said Izabelle Labrador of Providence.’

To feel safe. But what are they actually going to do, to be safe?” said Jamario Woodward of Providence.
